Recently, I’ve had several close friends make the jump from renting an apartment to purchasing their first home. It’s an exciting time for anyone making this type move. One of the first things that came to my mind was “What type of housewarming gift should I get them?” Well, there are a lot of options to select from such as fine china, silverware and even a toaster oven (Yes, a toaster oven!). But I thought that this time around I should get them something personalized to set myself apart from everyone. Then it struck me that both of these friends love to watch movies. Therefore, I spent some time to gather what I needed to put together a couple of awesome housewarming gift basket ideas for the both of them.

One friend enjoys dramas and comedies so I put in a copy of the movie 21 that recently came out this week. It’s a great movie that is both suspenseful and comedic. Also, he’s the type of person who enjoys playing blackjack, especially in Vegas. Since I’ve gone to Las Vegas many times with friends, I thought this would be a great movie to include as part of the theme gift basket. In addition to the DVD, I also packed the housewarming gift basket with a bottle of wine, gourmet popcorn, a box of red vines, a box of Godiva chocolate (his girlfriend loves chocolate) and a $10 Blockbuster gift card.

For my other friend and his wife, I had to think long and hard about what type of movies they both enjoy. I know that my friend likes action and horror movies but his wife is more the type who likes drama and sci-fi flicks. I felt I was between a rock and hard place. In any event, I browsed online at Amazon and picked out two movies that catered to both individuals: Hitman and The Golden Compass. These are both movies that I recently watched and felt that they were pretty good movies to watch in the comfort of your own home. Like the other movie basket I put together, I packed in similar goodies and treats but included a $10 Starbucks card in place of the Blockbuster card. They both love to drink coffee while watching movies.

Putting together the movie gift baskets were pretty simple and straightforward. My wife and I hand-delivered the baskets to each of their homes and they were so thrilled about the housewarming gift idea we put together, they wanted to learn how to make them as well! So there you have, thinking outside the box and setting yourself apart when it comes to gifts will definitely go a long way. The next time you have a friend or relative moving into a new home, think about making a housewarming gift basket with a personalized touch for them!
